Modern single stick
– Techniques and combinations
– 12 attacks with the right and left hand
– Counterattacks: – strikes (1-4 strikes)
– punyo/butt strikes (1-4 punyo/butt strikes)
– 1st disarming series: attacks only right to right or left to left, with a stick. Attacks 1& 2 only

Drills
– Block as reaction: against continuous attack, including evasion by shifting weight to the back leg
– Modern 1-1: including evasion by shifting weight to the back leg

Karanza
– Karanza free flow movement using Arnis footwork in multiple directions with:
– white belt techniques (N)
– twirling techniques (up and down)
– hand change

Empty hands
– Defensive techniques (with follow ups)
– Modern principle (right side against): – empty hand attacks
– stick attacks

Drill
– Focus mitt (level 1)
free movement, then 1 – 3 strike combinations in place (to positions 0 – 5 & combinations) as well as application of the modern principle against circular attacks

Free movement then 1 – 3 strike combinations (positions 0-5) initiated or ended by leg techniques
(positions 6 – 8), as well as elbow strikes (positions 2, 3 &5) and application of the 1st double stick series
against attacks from the right or left side (attacks #1 or #2)

Application with common objects (transferability)
– Demonstrate techniques from this and the previous rank level
– small object (up to 20 cm, e.g. a ballpoint pen or a key ring)
– short object (30-40 cm, a short stick, a rolled newspaper, a bottle or a shoe)

Self-defense
– Quick releases: 10 techniques against grabbing:
– of the stick
– of the stick hand
– of the hand

Defence against bear hugs and chokes with the aid of a small object

– 2nd disarming series (attacks with right and left)

1st & 2nd disarming series with the stick in the other hand

Drills
– Modern 1-1:    – move out into karanza and back into the drill
– change from medio to corto (punyo (butt) 1-1) and back
Tapi-Tapi:    – 3 punyo (butt) techniques, (both right and left)
– abanico from reverse blocks (right and left)
– hand changes in all three distances
– initiate disarms (all known series) but continue the drill

Classical arnis

– Largo largo (force to force)
– Hirada batanguena
– Abanico corto (strikes)
– Double stick: 2nd  series with application and redonda

Drill:
Classical 1-1:  begin in largo, move out to karanza and return to 1-1

Karanza
Karanza         free flow movement using arnis footwork in multiple directions including:
– stick techniques (single stick and double stick)
– free twirling (including figure 8 and double zero)

Empty hands
– Defence and follow ups
– Principle of the 2nd double stick series against:     – stick attack
– empty hand
– Locks (demonstrated with applications)
– centerlock
– standing centerlock
– shoulder lock

Drill
– Modern Drill:    – with high-low variations of strike #1 + #2
– change to the left side
– Focus mitt, (level 3): Free movement, multi strike/kick combinations, with bob and weave, blocks and cover blocks  against punches

Application with common objects (transferability)      
– Demonstrate techniques from this and previous rank levels using flexible objects (e.g.  belt, lanyard, towel, clothing)

Self-defence
– Quick releases:     – against wrist grab and punch by the attacker
– against bear hugs and chokes

Tasks
– diagonal stick attacks from above (solve using techniques from 5th-3rd klase)
– self-defence in situations defined by the examiner

– DeCadena: with counterattack variations

Focus mitt, (level 5):

Free movement, free defence against punches (straight punch, hook, and combinations) and kicks (as well as combinations) with trapping and body manipulation techniques followed by multiple strike/kick counters

Application with everyday objects (transferability): Demonstrate techniques from this and previous rank levels using:
– a long object (90 cm and longer, e.g. walking stick, umbrella, crutch)
– all objects from the previous rank levels (small, short, flexible, two handed)

Self-defense
– Defence against stick attack: block, disarm, lock, throw

Tasks
– 2 diagonal stick attacks from above (solve using techniques from 5th-1st klase)
– jab-cross (solve using techniques from 5th-1st klase)
– empty hand self defence against a knife attack
– self-defence in situations defined by the examiner
– chaos training

About the author:

Grandmaster Datu Dieter Knüttel

Dieter Knüttel, M.A. in sports science is Modern Arnis chief-instructor for der DAV of Germany and European Modern Arnis Representative (1996 -2001) of Professor Remy A. Presas.
He 1received the title of DATU and the rank of Lakan Anim, 6th Dan Modern Arnis from Professor Remy Presas in 1996, as 4th of 6 persons and the only person outside of the USA who has received this title.
After receivinhg his 7th, 8th and 9th Dan in the Philippines,  on Septemer 24th  2016 it was publically announced in Dortmund, Germany, that he has awarded 10th Dan, Lakan Sampu by Grandmaster Roberto Presas, 10. Dan Modern Arnis.

Dieter Knuettel is involved with the Filipino Martial Arts since 1978 and he has been teaching FMA/Modern Arnis seminars since 1980 all over Europe, in Australia, in the USA, in Russia and even in the Philippines.

He is one of the most experienced Modern Arnis Masters worldwide.
